Case Study 02 — Workflow Assessment in a Regulated Environment
Governance and compliance function at a large energy utility
Challenge: Teams were using AI informally for writing and document refinement, but leadership had no visibility into which workflows were candidates for deeper AI integration — or which ones carried too much regulatory risk.
What we did:
- Conducted structured interviews with specialists across governance, maintenance, and regulatory functions
- Mapped workflows to the task level, identifying judgment requirements at each step
- Scored every activity on automation feasibility and verification complexity
- Flagged high-risk areas where AI-generated language could create compliance exposure (e.g., regulatory terms like "shall" vs. "should" carrying different legal weight)
- Identified 12 high-value automation candidates and 4 restricted workflows
- Produced an agent architecture blueprint for the top 5 use cases
- Delivered a capability gap analysis informing the next training phase
- Prevented a compliance risk in governance documentation before it reached production
